Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, shared the news with the world: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis had battled respiratory issues throughout his life. At the age of 21, he underwent surgery to remove a portion of his lung due to a severe infection. As he grew older, his health remained fragile. In November 2023, he canceled a planned trip to the United Arab Emirates due to influenza and lung inflammation. His condition worsened in February 2025 after being admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital with bronchitis. By February 18, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. After spending 38 days in the hospital, he returned to Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery, but his health never fully improved.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remained deeply engaged with the Church and the faithful. Just a year before his passing, in April 2024, he approved a revised edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, the liturgical book that guides papal funeral rites. This updated version reflects his desire for simplicity and humility. According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope had requested that his funeral emphasize faith in the Resurrection of Christ and portray him not as a figure of worldly power, but as a pastor and servant of God.
