Heavy Rains Flood Nairobi Streets as Weather Warnings Persist

Heavy rains continue to lash Nairobi, flooding streets and roads across the city. The downpour, which began Sunday evening, has left pedestrians and motorists struggling to navigate fast-moving waters as they hurried home. Strong winds accompanied the rain, making driving conditions dangerous. On Mama Ngina Street, several vehicles stalled in deep floodwaters, a scene mirrored on other roads where motorists were left stranded in their cars. In Parklands, several workers were trapped at a site on Suswa Road after a wall collapsed due to the heavy rains.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning of isolated heavy rainfall and temperature extremes in various parts of the country. Affected regions include the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the Coast, Western, and North-Western Kenya.

“These rains will be scattered but could be intense in isolated areas. We urge Kenyans to plan and stay safe,” the department stated in its weekly update.

The advisory comes amid the ongoing March-April-May long rains season, which has seen shifting weather patterns and uneven rainfall across counties. Despite regional differences, the Meteorological Department continues to stress the importance of preparedness.

“We're still in the long rainy season, and weather patterns can change rapidly. Communities should remain alert, especially in areas prone to flash floods or where livelihoods are sensitive to temperature changes,” the department added.

As unpredictable weather continues to affect the country, farmers, motorists, and residents in vulnerable areas are urged to monitor daily forecasts and follow safety advisories from local authorities.
